What is Skin Needling?

Skin needling, or collagen induction therapy, through dry tattooing is a procedure proven to smooth wrinkles, reduce acne scarring and even reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Precise dry tattooing of specific lines, scars or stretchmarks spurs collagen formation that fills wrinkles or other skin indentations and renews the skin's surface.  Skin needling is also referred to as facial needling, medical needling, dry tattooing and collagen induction therapy.

Dry tattooing is a new, yet effective skin treatment that can be carried out in a spa versus requiring a dermatologist or medical doctor to administer.

How Does Skin Needling Work?

Basically, skin needling stimulates creation of new collagen production in your skin as it heals from the tiny abrasions. As your skin repairs itself, new collagen builds up in the Papillary Dermis (middle layer) just below the surface. The wrinkles, lines, or depressed scars plump from the bottom-up without the use of anything artificial.

Multiple skin needling sessions to treat the same lines will gradually and continually build new collagen to fill-in the treated areas.

Frequently Asked Questions :

Is there recovery time after skin needling treatment?

You should expect minimal swelling and visible red lines that look a little like a cat scratch on the skin for 3-6 days diminishing rapidly over that time. Fine lines and wrinkles will look like cat scratches. Scars will be more red as like an abrasion. Light scabbing will form. During the first 3 to 7 days, ointments should be applied to the treated skin to aid healing.

How long will the effects of skin needling last?

While everyone's skin is different, skin needling's effects can last as long at seven years.

How long before I will see results?

You'll see a difference in as little as a week - as soon as the scratch marks are no longer visible. Depending on the depth of a scar, stretch mark or wrinkle, you may want to get multiple treatments. Subsequent procedures should be performed at least 6 to 8 weeks after the prior treatment to allow for complete healing and collagen production which may take up to 6 months for full effect.

  • Applications of the Needling Technique:

  • Wrinkles: Fine lines and wrinkles on the face can be diminished with facial needling.

  • Scars: Skin needling can decrease the depth of pitted, depressed, or shallow scars caused by acne, chicken pox, surgeries, or trauma.

  • Raised or hypertrophic (overgrown) scars can become smoother with needling treatments that flatten the elevated scar tissue.

  • Examples include borders of skin grafts and other hypertrophic surgical scars.

  • Stretch Marks: Skin needling of stretchmarks has been shown to reduce their visibility significantly over time.

How is the dry tattoo skin needling procedure different than rollers?

Skin needling with a tattoo machine is more precise in that you treat only the area on the skin that is depressed.  Rollers cover the entire area with many pins that prick the skin all over. For lines, wrinkles and scars, treating them with the precision of dry tattooing ensures only the ares that need to plump will do so. With rollers, the entire treated area will create collagen simply plumping the entire area so the relative depth of the wrinkle or scar remains.
